Brown uses the life stories of West Indian intellectuals to investigate the dynamic history of immigration to New York and the long battle for racial equality in modern America. The majority of the 40,000 black immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island during the first wave of Caribbean immigration to New York hailed from the English-speaking Caribbean--mainly Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad. Arriving at the height of the Industrial Revolution and a new era in black culture and progress, these black immigrants dreamed of a more prosperous future. However, northern-style Jim Crow hindered their upward social mobility. In response, Caribbean intellectuals delivered speeches and sermons, wrote poetry and novels, and created performance art pieces challenging the racism that impeded their success. Brown traces the influences of religion as revealed at Unitarian minister Ethelred Brown's Harlem Community Church and in Richard B. Moore's fiery speeches on Harlem street corners during the age of the 'New Negro.' She investigates the role of performance art and Pearl Primus's declaration that 'dance is a weapon for social change' during the long civil rights movement. Shirley Chisholm's advocacy for women and all working-class Americans in the House of Representatives and as a presidential candidate during the peak of the Feminist Movement moves the book into more overt politics. Novelist Paule Marshall's insistence that black immigrant women be seen and heard in the realm of American Arts and Letters at the advent of 'multiculturalism' reveals the power of literature. The wide-ranging styles of West Indian campaigns for social justice reflect the expansive imaginations and individual life stories of each intellectual Brown studies. In addition to deepening our understanding of the long battle for racial equality in America, these life stories reveal the powerful interplay between personal and public politics"--|cProvided by publisher 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on October 23, 2015). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 27 National Book Committee.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/516246 650 0 West Indian Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85146174|zNew York (State)|zNew York|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007751-781|xIntellectual life.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005642 650 0 West Indian Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85146174|zNew York (State)|zNew York|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007751-781|xPolitics and government.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002011436 650 0 Intellectuals|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85067169|zNew York (State)|zNew York|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n79007751-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Immigrants|zNew York (State)|zNew York|vBiography.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008123060 650 0 Social justice|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123969|zNew York (State)|zNew York|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n79007751-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 West Indian Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1173920 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Intellectuals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/975799 650 7 Immigrants.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/967712 650 7 Emigration and immigration.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/908690 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xEthnic Studies|xAfrican American Studies. |2bisacsh 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 HISTORY|xCaribbean & West Indies|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xBlack Studies (Global)|2bisacsh 650 7 Social justice.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122603 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xDiscrimination & Race Relations.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xMinority Studies.|2bisacsh 651 0 New York (N.Y.)|xIntellectual life.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh95005084 651 0 New York (N.Y.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79007751|xEmigration and immigration|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005907|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 New York (N.Y.)|xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008116330|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 West Indies|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146187|xEmigration and immigration|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00005907|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 7 New York (State)|zNew York.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1204333 651 7 West Indies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1243265 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBrown, Tammy L., 1976-|tCity of islands. |dJackson : University Press of Mississippi, 2015 |z9781628462265|w(DLC) 2015006780 830 0 Caribbean studies series (Jackson, Miss.)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2008178087 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1076197|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
