How English is social media? 520 Daniel Miller spent 18 months undertaking an ethnographic study with the residents of an English village, tracking their use of the different social media platforms. Following his study, he argues that a focus on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram does little to explain what we post on social media. Instead, the key to understanding how people in an English village use social media is to appreciate just how 'English' their usage has become. He introduces the 'Goldilocks Strategy': how villagers use social media to calibrate precise levels of interaction ensuring that each relationship is neither too cold nor too hot, but 'just right'. He explores the consequences of social media for groups ranging from schoolchildren through to the patients of a hospice, and he compares these connections to more traditional forms of association such as the church and the neighbourhood. Above all, Miller finds an extraordinary clash between new social media that bridges the private and the public domains, and an English sensibility that is all about keeping these two domains separate. 588 0 Print version record. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Social media|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2006007023|zEngland, South East.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh95000084-781 650 0 Information society|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh89000606|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zEngland, South East. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh95000084-781 650 7 Social media.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1741098 650 7 Information society|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/972779 650 7 Information society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 972767 650 7 Social media.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0001321 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMiller, Daniel.|tSocial media in an English village.|d[Place of publication not identified] : UCL Press, 2016|z1910634425|w(OCoLC)933438309 830 0 Why we post.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2016033224 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1g69xs1 |zOnline eBook.
