This book examines the complex politics of commemorating Ireland's 'other' 1916. During the present 'Decade of Centenaries, ' commemoration - viewed as a driver or even cause of past conflict in Northern Ireland - has come to occupy a central place in ongoing efforts at peacebuilding and reconciliation. Drawing on more than 18 months of original ethnographic field work conducted in Belfast, this book examines the conflicted politics of Ulster Loyalist commemorations of the Battle of the Somme during the Decade. In a context defined for Loyalists by what they have termed the 'culture war, ' commemoration is the means by which they confront and challenge the perceived erosion of their identity in the 'new' Northern Ireland. Evershed examines how commemoration of the Somme brings Loyalists into conflict not only with the politics of Irish Nationalism, but with the 'peacebuilding' state and, crucially, with each other."--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 Great Britain.|bArmy.|bDivision, 36th.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n97081731 610 17 Great Britain.|bArmy.|bDivision, 36th.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/730407 647 7 Battle of the Somme (1st)|c(France :|d1916)|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/1125774 647 7 World War|d(1914-1918)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1180746 648 7 21st century|2fast 648 7 1914-2099|2fast 650 0 Somme, 1st Battle of the, France, 1916|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh85124800|xCentennial celebrations, etc.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99004929 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85148236|zNorthern Ireland|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79055927-781|xAnniversaries, etc. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99002325 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|zIreland|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010119532|xInfluence.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002005444 650 0 Collective memory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2006002444|zNorthern Ireland.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79055927-781 650 0 Group identity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85057485|zNorthern Ireland.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79055927-781 650 0 Political culture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh87001689|zNorthern Ireland.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79055927-781 650 7 Collective memory.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1739814 650 7 Group identity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/948442 650 7 Political culture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1069263 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 Ireland|xPolitics and government|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85068032|y21st century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012478 651 7 Northern Ireland.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1205215 651 7 Ireland.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205427 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aEvershed, Jonathan, 1989-|tGhosts of the Somme.|dNotre Dame, Indiana : University of Notre Dame Press, [2018]|z9780268103859|w(DLC) 2018011948 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1815643|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
