Vincent Woodard takes the enslaved person's claims of human consumption seriously, focusing on both the literal starvation of the slave and the tropes of cannibalism on the part of the slaveholder, and further draws attention to the ways in which Blacks experienced their consumption as a fundamentally homoerotic occurrence. The Delectable Negro explores these connections between homoeroticism, cannibalism, and cultures of consumption in the context of American literature and US slave culture. Utilizing many staples of African American literature and culture, such as the slave narratives of Olaudah Equiano, Harriet Jacobs, and Frederick Douglass, as well as other less circulated materials like James L. Smith's slave narrative, runaway slave advertisements, and numerous articles from Black newspapers published in the nineteenth century, Woodard traces the racial assumptions, political aspirations, gender codes, and philosophical frameworks that dictated both European and white American arousal towards Black males and hunger for Black male flesh. Woodard uses these texts to unpack how slaves struggled not only against social consumption, but also against endemic mechanisms of starvation and hunger designed to break them. He concludes with an examination of the controversial chain gang oral sex scene in Toni Morrison's Beloved, suggesting that even at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty- first century, we are still at a loss for language with which to describe Black male hunger within a plantation culture of consumption"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Enslaved persons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123347|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xSocial conditions. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 650 0 African American men|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001865|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xSocial conditions. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 650 0 Plantation life|zSouthern States|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010106540 650 0 Starvation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85127471|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Cannibalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85019617|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Consumption (Economics)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85031498|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zSouthern States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Male homosexuality|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85061786|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zSouthern States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Slavery in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94008615 650 0 African American men in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh93007967 650 0 American literature|xAfrican American authors|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007100736 650 7 Enslaved persons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1120522 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 African American men.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 799236 650 7 Plantation life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1065779 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Starvation|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1131745 650 7 Starvation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1131740 650 7 Cannibalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/845849 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 650 7 Consumption (Economics)|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/876475 650 7 Consumption (Economics)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/876455 650 7 Male homosexuality|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1430696 650 7 Male homosexuality.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1430687 650 7 Slavery in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1120515 650 7 African American men in literature.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/799257 650 7 American literature|xAfrican American authors.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/807114 651 7 Southern States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1244550 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 Joyce, Justin A.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2005087616|eeditor. 700 1 McBride, Dwight A.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n99037875|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWoodard, Vincent, 1971-2008.|tDelectable Negro|z9780814794616|w(DLC) 2014002841|w(OCoLC)863195393 830 0 Sexual cultures.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n99002051 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=777827|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
