As these cities became leisure destinations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Anthony Stanonis argues, they were forced to balance the competing demands of modernizing consumer culture and Southern traditionalism. They also participated in an especially delicate dance regarding race--one involving everything from cultural anxieties around tanning to a practical desire to tamp down the sort of racial conflict that might discourage tourism. Stanonis suggests that these negotiations were not always successful. Residents of the beach towns who did not profit from tourism and resented catering to outsiders' values, for example, sometimes struck back through acts of violence. Stanonis traces the rise of the infrastructure of tourism, the tensions of preserving the environment, and the development of a profitable industry in a clear and objective fashion. More importantly, he explores the complexities of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and the tensions between a resort's illegal underground and its 'family entertainment.' The text contains a breadth of archival sources--including the author's own personal collection. The sources blend the perspectives of boosters and developers with those of residents and tourists. Stanonis skillfully weaves the stories of actual people throughout the historical narrative he constructs, which makes the manuscript both more enjoyable and more relevant"--|cProvided by publisher. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1865-1945|2fast 648 7 1865-1950|2fast 650 0 Leisure|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85075925|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zSouthern States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Tourism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85136255|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zSouthern States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Seaside resorts|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85119373|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Seaside resorts|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85119373|zAtlantic Coast (South Atlantic States)|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2006020152-781 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 0 Seaside resorts|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85119373|zGulf Coast (U.S.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85057884-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Social change|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123918|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Leisure|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/996035 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Leisure.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/996018 650 7 Tourism|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1153186 650 7 Tourism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1153142 650 7 Seaside resorts.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1110416 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122310 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 650 7 Economic conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919582 651 0 Southern States|xSocial conditions|y1865-1945.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh90004000 651 0 Southern States|xPolitics and government|y1865-1950. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125657 651 0 Southern States|xRace relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008111476 651 0 Southern States|xEconomic conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125640 651 7 Southern States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1244550 655 4 Electronic books. 830 0 Politics and culture in the twentieth-century South. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2006024069 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=802120|zOnline eBook.
