Brian Craig Miller provides medical history of the procedure, looks at men who rejected amputation, and examines how Southern men and women adjusted their ideas about honor, masculinity, and love in response to the presence of large numbers of amputees during and after the war. While some historians have explored the lives of the wounded, disabled and amputated soldiers throughout the major military conflicts of the twentieth century, few monographs have returned to a time when medical care remained primitive at best in American history: the Civil War. While one recent article explored what amputation may have meant to Union soldiers returning from battle, the same has yet to be done for the losing side in the military conflict. The destruction of slavery, the perseverance of the Union and the triumph of liberty, freedom and equality ensured that the sacrifices of Northern men would be recognized, memorialized and cherished for generations beyond the battlefield. However, can the same be said for Southern amputated men, who returned from the war scarred, disillusioned and defeated? In his travels in the South over the past five years, Miller has combed through archives, producing a wealth of surgical and medical manuals, hospital records, surgeons reports, diary, letter and journal entries pertaining to amputation, legislative records, pension files and applications, newspaper reports and numerous anecdotes about what it means to lose a limb. These sources allow Miller to combine political, medical, military, social, cultural and gender history into a much-needed disability study of the Confederacy"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 American Civil War|c(United States :|d1861-1865)|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1351658 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Amputees|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85004669|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xSocial conditions |y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2001008858 650 0 Amputation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85004661|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Surgery, Military|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85130779|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Disabled veterans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85142990|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xSocial conditions |y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2001008858 650 0 Masculinity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85081797|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zSouthern States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125633-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 7 Amputees.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/808043 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Amputation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/808038 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Surgery, Military.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1139406 650 7 Disabled veterans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 894659 650 7 Masculinity|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/2012888 650 7 Masculinity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1011027 651 0 United States|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140205|xVeterans. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006447 651 0 United States|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|xMedical care.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140247 651 0 United States|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|xSocial aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007100005 651 0 Confederate States of America|xSocial conditions.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85030860 651 0 Southern States|xSocial conditions|y19th century.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010113260 651 2 United States.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014481 651 2 Confederate States of America.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D059009 651 7 Southern States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1244550 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMiller, Brian Craig.|tEmpty sleeves. |dAthens, Georgia : The University of Georgia Press, [2015]|z9780820343310|w(DLC) 2014023161|w(OCoLC)892432221 830 0 Uncivil wars.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2011172918 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1018441|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
