Sánchez was a reformer, activist, and intellectual, and one of the most influential members of the 'Mexican American Generation' (1930-1960). A professor of education at the University of Texas from the beginning of World War II until the early 1970s, Sánchez was an outspoken proponent of integration and assimilation. He spent his life combating racial prejudice while working with such organizations as the ACLU and LULAC in the fight to improve educational and political opportunities for Mexican Americans. Yet his fervor was not always appreciated by those for whom he advocated, and some of his more unpopular stands made him a polarizing figure within the Latino community. Carlos Blanton has published the first biography of this complex man of notable contradictions. The author honors Sánchez's efforts, hitherto mostly unrecognized, in the struggle for equal opportunity, while not shying away from his subject's personal faults and foibles. The result is a long-overdue portrait of a towering figure in mid-twentieth-century America and the all-important cause to which he dedicated his life: Mexican American integration"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Sánchez, George Isidore,|d1906-1972.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n50019370 600 17 Sánchez, George Isidore,|d1906-1972.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/6235 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Mexican Americans|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008107728 650 0 Intellectuals|zUnited States|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008104765 650 0 Social reformers|zUnited States|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010113280 650 0 Political activists|zUnited States|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008109187 650 0 Educators|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85041161|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80129616-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Mexican Americans|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85084500|zSouthwest, New|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125669-781|xHistory |y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Mexican Americans|xSegregation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh97000631|zSouthwest, New|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125669-781|xHistory |y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Education, Bilingual|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85041053|zSouthwest, New|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125669-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 7 Mexican Americans|xBiography.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1425954 650 7 Intellectuals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/975799 650 7 Social reformers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122841 650 7 Political activists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1069192 650 7 Educators.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/903702 650 7 Mexican Americans|xCivil rights.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019081 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Mexican Americans|xSegregation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019148 650 7 Education, Bilingual.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 902886 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 651 0 Southwest, New|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85125669|xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00007552|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Texas.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210336 651 7 New Southwest.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1244556 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBlanton, Carlos Kevin, 1970-|tGeorge I.
