This thriving ecotopia is the byproduct of continuing efforts by residents, businesses, and civic leaders alike. In Seattle and the Roots of Urban Sustainability, Jeffrey Craig Sanders examines the rise of environmental activism in Seattle amidst the "urban crisis" of the 1960s and its aftermath. Like much activism during this period, the environmental movement began at the grassroots level--in local neighborhoods over local issues. Sanders links the rise of local environmentalism to larger movements for economic, racial, and gender equality and to a counterculture that changed the social and political landscape. He examines emblematic battles that erupted over the planned demolition of Pike Place Market, a local landmark, and environmental organizing in the Central District during the War on Poverty. Sanders also relates the story of Fort Lawton, a decommissioned army base, where Audubon Society members and Native American activists feuded over future land use. The rise and popularity of environmental consciousness among Seattle's residents came to influence everything from industry to politics, planning, and global environmental movements. Yet, as Sanders reveals, it was in the small, local struggles that urban environmental activism began. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900 - 1999|2fast 650 0 Environmentalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh93004752|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Urban ecology (Sociology)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88004757|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Sustainable development|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh92005743|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Neighborhoods|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85090662|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Suburbs|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85129571|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Suburban life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85129569|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 City and town life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026255|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 7 Environmentalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 913543 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Urban ecology (Sociology)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1733718 650 7 Sustainable development.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1139731 650 7 Neighborhoods.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1715963 650 7 Suburbs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1136941 650 7 Suburban life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1136930 650 7 City and town life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 862081 651 0 Seattle (Wash.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79041965|xEnvironmental conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005384 651 0 Seattle (Wash.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79041965|xSocial conditions|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008860 651 7 Washington (State)|zSeattle.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1204940 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSanders, Jeffrey C.|tSeattle and the roots of urban sustainability.|dPittsburgh, Pa. : University of Pittsburgh Press, ©2010|w(DLC) 2010011363 |w(OCoLC)580120066 830 0 History of the urban environment.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n2004012517 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=829273|zOnline eBook.
