While commonly portrayed as an isolated tropical outpost, this study places the colony in the context of its connections to the rest of the Atlantic world. These economic and migratory links assured the colony's survival, but also created many incentives to evade the mercantilistically inclined metropolitan authorities. By combining the available data on Dutch and North American shipping with accounts of major political and economic developments, the author uncovers a hitherto hidden world of illicit dealings, and convincingly argues that these illegal practices were essential to the development and survival of the colony, and woven into the fabric of the colonial project itself"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 To 1814|2fast 650 0 Black market|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85014583|zSuriname|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79022986-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Shipping|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85121579|zSuriname|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79022986-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Immigrants|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85064517|zSuriname|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79022986-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Economic development|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85040804|zSuriname|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79022986-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Black market.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/833723 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Colonization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/868483 650 7 Commerce.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/869279 650 7 Shipping.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1116352 650 7 Immigrants.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/967712 650 7 Economic development.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 901785 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 Suriname|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79022986 |xColonization.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005562 651 0 Suriname|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79022986 |xCommerce|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001412|zNetherlands.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78085423-781 651 0 Suriname|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79022986 |xCommerce|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001412|zNorth America.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85092455-781 651 0 Netherlands|xCommerce|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008116276|zSuriname.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79022986-781 651 0 North America|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85092455|xCommerce|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001412|zSuriname.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79022986-781 651 0 Suriname|xPolitics and government|yTo 1814.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85130820 651 7 Suriname.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204607 651 7 Netherlands.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204034 651 7 North America.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1242475 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFatah-Black, Karwan.|tWhite lies and black markets|z9789004283329|w(DLC) 2015004854 |w(OCoLC)900685672 830 0 Atlantic world (Leiden, Netherlands) ;|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n2003105715|vv. 31. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=980560|zOnline eBook.
