This trade has been aided by the advent of affordable transport, information technologies, and the movement of assisted reproductive expertise around the world, combined with regulatory differences between different jurisdictions that make it possible for people to circumvent restrictions in their home countries to pursue their imagined families elsewhere. However, the growth of this industry has thrown into relief older forms of inequality by class, race, or economic status, and poses new questions about the social impact of these technologies and the new opportunities and threats they pose to women, particularly poorer women from developing countries, whose bodies are the sources of these products. International Surrogacy as Disruptive Industry in Southeast Asia traces the rise and fall of surrogacy as a commercial service in Thailand. Thailand had been a popular destination for commercial surrogacy from 2011 until the 'Baby Gammy' case in 2014, which caused the military government of Thailand to ban the practice in 2015. Since its closure in Thailand, the industry has moved to other countries in the region, such as Cambodia, which lack any current regulations or legislation. This fascinating ethnography brings to light the lives of the intended parents, the doctors, brokers, and regulators in Thailand, to show how this amazing opportunity for some also offers the potential for exploitation of vulnerable groups of people in the absence of adequate protections"-- |cProvided by publisher 546 In English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Surrogate motherhood|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88004707|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zThailand.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79059683-781 650 0 Surrogate motherhood|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88004707|xMoral and ethical aspects|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006099|zThailand. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79059683-781 650 0 Surrogate motherhood|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88004707|vCross-cultural studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001526 650 0 Cross-cultural studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85034273 650 0 Medical anthropology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85082859 650 7 Surrogate motherhood|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1139557 650 7 Surrogate motherhood.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1139551 650 7 Surrogate motherhood|xMoral and ethical aspects.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1139555 650 7 Medical anthropology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1013693 650 7 Cross-cultural studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/884159 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Anthropologische Medizin.|2gnd 650 7 Biomedizin.|2gnd 650 7 Ersatzmutterschaft.|2gnd 650 7 Extrakorporale Befruchtung.|2gnd 650 7 Kinderwunsch.|2gnd 650 7 Medizintourismus.|2gnd 650 7 Reproduktionsmedizin.|2gnd 651 0 Southeast Asia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85008627 651 2 Asia, Southeastern.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D001210 651 7 Thailand.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205310 651 7 Southeast Asia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1240499 651 7 Thailand.|2gnd 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Cross-cultural studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1423769 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWhittaker, Andrea (Andrea M.), 1967- |tInternational surrogacy as disruptive industry in Southeast Asia.|dNew Brunswick, New Jersey : Rutgers University Press, [2019]|z9780813596846|w(DLC) 2018011717 |w(OCoLC)1029791999 830 0 Medical anthropology (New Brunswick, N.J.)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2018058112 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1797044|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
