The golden gate of Tajikistan -- Epilogue. 520 2 "Azan on the Moon is an in-depth anthropological study of people's lives along the Pamir Highway in eastern Tajikistan. Constructed in the 1930s in rugged high- altitude terrain, the road fundamentally altered the material and social fabric of this former Soviet outpost on the border with Afghanistan and China. The highway initially brought sentiments of disconnection and hardship, followed by Soviet modernization and development, and ultimately a sense of distinction from bordering countries and urban centers that continues to this day. Based on extensive fieldwork and through an analysis of construction, mobility, technology, media, development, Islam, and the state, Till Mostowlansky shows how ideas of modernity are both challenged and reinforced in contemporary Tajikistan. In the wake of China's rise in Central Asia, people along the Pamir Highway strive to reconcile a modern future with a modern past. Weaving together the road, a population, and a region, Azan on the Moon presents a rich ethnography of global connections"-- Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Social change|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123918|zTajikistan|zKūḣistonī Badakhshon.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no00065333-781 650 0 Mountain roads|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85087804|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zTajikistan.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n91129915-781 650 0 Ethnology|zTajikistan.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85045393 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122310 650 7 Mountain roads.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1028307 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 650 7 Ethnology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/916106 651 0 Pamir Highway|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2017003309|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 651 0 Kūḣistonī Badakhshon (Tajikistan)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no00065333|xSocial conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 651 7 Tajikistan|zKūḣistonī Badakhshon.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1291233 651 7 Tajikistan.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1260661 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMostowlansky, Till.|tAzan on the moon. |dPittsburgh, PA : University of Pittsburgh Press, [2017] |z9780822964438|z0822964430|w(DLC) 2017014497 |w(OCoLC)959265648 830 0 Central Eurasia in context.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2010142016 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1512956|zOnline eBook.
