The central argument is that abusive regulatory regimes discourage the formation of business associations. At the same time, poor regulatory enforcement tends to encourage associational membership growth. Academic research often treats special interest groups as vehicles of protectionism and non-productive collusion. This book challenges this perspective with evidence of market-friendly activities of industry associations as well as their benign influence on patterns of public governance. Careful analysis of cross-national quantitative data that spans more than 25 countries, as well as the qualitative examination of the development of business associations in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Croatia, shows that postcommunist business associations function as substitutes for state and private mechanisms of economic governance. They challenge corrupt bureaucracy and contribute to the establishment of effective and predictable regulatory regimes. These arguments and empirical findings put the long-standing issues of economic regulations, public goods, and collective action in a new theoretical perspective"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Trade associations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh95006344|zRussia (Federation)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n92056007-781 650 0 Pressure groups|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85106541|zRussia (Federation)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n92056007-781 650 0 Trade associations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh95006344|zEurope, Eastern.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85045765-781 650 0 Pressure groups|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85106541|zEurope, Eastern.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85045765-781 650 0 Trade associations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh95006344|zEurasia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85045617-781 650 0 Pressure groups|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85106541|zEurasia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85045617-781 650 7 Trade associations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1153802 650 7 Pressure groups.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1075954 651 7 Russia (Federation)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1262050 651 7 Eastern Europe.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1245079 651 7 Eurasia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1245058 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Electronic books.|2lcgft 776 08 |iPrint version:|aDuvanova, Dinissa, 1977-|tBuilding business in post-communist Russia, eastern Europe, and Eurasia|z9781107030169|w(DLC) 2012033219 |w(OCoLC)809249953 830 0 ACLS Humanities E-Book (Series)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2012023082 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=508367|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
