Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills bag." In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father distrusted the medical establishment, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when an older brother became violent. When another brother got himself into college and came back with news of the world beyond the mountain, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. She taught herself enough mathematics, grammar, and science to take the ACT and was admitted to Brigham Young University. There, she studied psychology, politics, philosophy, and history, learning for the first time about pivotal world events like the Holocaust and the Civil Rights Movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she'd traveled too far, if there was still a way home. 586 Alex Award, 2019 586 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction Longlist, 2019 586 Chicago Public Library Best Top Ten Books, 2018 586 John Leonard Prize Finalist, 2018 586 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography Finalist, 2018 586 National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography Finalist, 2018 586 NPR Best Books, 2018 586 Reading Women Award for Nonfiction, 2018 586 #1 New York Times Bestseller 600 10 Westover, Tara|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2017059530|xFamily.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00005743 600 17 Westover, Tara.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1994829 650 0 Women|zIdaho|vBiography. 650 0 Survivalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85130884|zIdaho|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81014565-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Preparedness|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85106384|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Latter Day Saints|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85087296|zIdaho|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81014565-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Home schooling|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh88002564|zIdaho|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81014565-781|vAnecdotes.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001294 650 0 Women college students|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008006119|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Victims of family violence|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh90006067|zIdaho|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81014565-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Adult children of dysfunctional families|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh89005609|zIdaho|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81014565-781|vBiography. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Subculture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85129417|zIdaho.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81014565-781 650 2 Education, Nonprofessional.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/ D004505 650 7 Families.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1728849 650 7 Survivalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1139664 650 7 Women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1176568 650 7 Preparedness.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1075502 650 7 Latter Day Saints.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1026314 650 7 Home schooling.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/959374 650 7 Women college students.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1177452 650 7 Victims of family violence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1166326 650 7 Rural conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1101474 650 7 Adult children of dysfunctional families.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/797262 650 7 Subculture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1136426 650 7 Christian biography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 858936 650 7 Women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001509 650 7 Womyn.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001516 650 7 Subcultures.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0001345 650 12 Anecdotes as Topic.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D000739 651 0 Idaho|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81014565 |xRural conditions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00007670|vAnecdotes.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001294 651 0 Idaho|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2008115390 651 1 Idaho|xRural conditions|vAnecdotes. 651 1 Idaho|vBiography. 651 7 Idaho.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1211709 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Anecdotes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423876 655 7 Autobiographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919894 655 7 Autobiographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026047 655 7 Anecdotes.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026044 856 42 |uhttps://tarawestover.com/ 901 MARCIVE 20231220 994 C0|bRID
