This book captures the dynamic process of popular filmmaking in Ghana as a new medium for the imagination and tracks the interlacing of the medium's technological, economic, social, cultural, and religious aspects. Stepping into the void left by the defunct state film industry, video movies negotiate the imaginaries deployed by state cinema on the one hand and Christianity on the other. Birgit Meyer analyzes Ghanaian video as a powerful, sensational form. Colliding with the state film industry's representations of culture, these movies are indebted to religious notions of divination and revelation. Exploring the format of "film as revelation," Meyer unpacks the affinity between cinematic and popular Christian modes of looking and showcases the transgressive potential haunting figurations of the occult. In this brilliant study, Meyer offers a deep, conceptually innovative analysis of the role of visual culture within the politics and aesthetics of religious world making."-- Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Motion pictures|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85088108|zGhana.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80061117-781 650 0 Motion pictures|xReligious aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85112574|xPentacostalism. 650 0 Motion picture industry|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85088047|zGhana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80061117-781|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 0 Video recordings|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85143204|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zGhana.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80061117-781 650 0 Video recordings|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85143204|xReligious aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006568|xPentacostalism. 650 0 Video recordings industry|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh95003390|zGhana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80061117-781|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 7 Motion pictures|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1027384 650 7 Motion pictures|xReligious aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1027371 650 7 Motion picture industry.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1027150 650 7 Video recordings|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1166508 650 7 Video recordings.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1166472 650 7 Video recordings industry.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1166514 651 7 Ghana.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208741 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMeyer, Birgit, 1960 March 21- |tSensational movies|z9780520287679|w(DLC) 2015026504 |w(OCoLC)908990160 830 0 Anthropology of Christianity ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2006121873|v17. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1093353|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
