The volume provides a clearer understanding of hostile and violent acts against both religious institutions and clergy, and explores the interpersonal aggression between clergymen or forms of violent behaviour of medieval clerics. It investigates, furthermore, the role of violence in maintaining discipline within religious communities, as well as religious, legal and cultural interpretations of the aforementioned issues. However, despite the many points of view expressed here, the central question the authors reconcile is how the phenomenon of violence interacted with the most important medieval institution, and official Church thinking regarding concepts such as power, rank, feudal loyalty and protection and ownership. Through the geographical diversity of the contributions and the variety of disciplinary perspectives, this book highlights how important violence was in the life of the clergy and how it formed an integral part of the legal culture and social bonds in many regions of medieval Europe. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (Ebsco, viewed December 19, 2014). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 To 1500|2fast 650 0 Church history|yMiddle Ages, 600-1500.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh85025625 650 0 Church and social problems|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85025528|zEurope|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85045631-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Violence|xReligious aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85143516|xHistory|yTo 1500.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006121 650 0 Civilization, Medieval.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026463 650 7 Church and social problems.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/860491 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Violence|xReligious aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1167248 650 7 Civilization, Medieval.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/863049 651 7 Europe.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1245064 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 Kotecki, Radosław,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2013111428|eeditor. 700 1 Maciejewski, Jacek,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n98042226|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMaciejewski, Jacek.|tEcclesia et Violentia : Violence against the Church and Violence within the Church in the Middle Ages.|dNewcastle upon Tyne : Cambridge Scholars Publishing, ©2014|z9781443866590 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=871059|zOnline eBook.
