Despite the prominence of war-making in this region, there has been surprisingly little research investigating the effects of war as a social and political process in the Middle East. To fill this gap, War, Institutions, and Social Change in the Middle East brings together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars who explore the role of war preparation and war-making on the formation and transformation of states and societies in the contemporary Middle East. Their findings pose significant challenges to widely accepted assumptions and present new theoretical starting points for the study of war and the state in the contemporary developing world. Heydemann's collaborators include political scientists, historians, anthropologists, and sociologists from the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. Their essays are both theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich, covering topics such as the effects of World War II on state-market relations in Syria and Egypt, the role of war in the rise of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the political economy of Lebanese militias, and the effects of the 1967 war on state and social institutions in Israel. The volume originated as a research planning project of the Joint Committee on the Near and Middle East of the Social Science Research Council. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900 - 1999|2fast 650 0 War and society|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85145155|zMiddle East.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85090501-781 650 0 War|xEconomic aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85145116|zMiddle East.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85090501-781 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 War and society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1170447 650 7 War|xEconomic aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1170335 651 0 Middle East|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85090509 651 7 Middle East.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1241586 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 Heydemann, Steven.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n84030785 710 2 Joint Committee on the Near and Middle East.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n84201064 776 08 |iPrint version:|tWar, institutions, and social change in the Middle East.|dBerkeley : University of California Press, ©2000|z0520224213|w(DLC) 00028657 |w(OCoLC)43662081 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=63861|zOnline eBook.
