A high-class prostitute and two others, one of them a child, had been stabbed to death the latest in a string of unsolved murders targeting women of the Parisian demimonde. Newspapers eagerly reported the lurid details, and when the police arrested Enrico Pranzini, a charismatic and handsome Egyptian migrant, the story became an international sensation. As the case descended into scandal and papers fanned the flames of anti- immigrant politics, the investigation became thoroughly enmeshed with the crisis-driven political climate of the French Third Republic and the rise of xenophobic right- wing movements. Aaron Freundschuh's account of the "Pranzini Affair" recreates not just the intricacies of the investigation and the raucous courtroom trial, but also the jockeying for status among rival players reporters, police detectives, doctors, and magistrates who all stood to gain professional advantage and prestige. Freundschuh deftly weaves together the sensational details of the case with the social and political undercurrents of the time, arguing that the racially charged portrayal of Pranzini reflects a mounting anxiety about the colonial "Other" within France's own borders. Pranzini's case provides a window into a transformational decade for the history of immigration, nationalism, and empire in France. --|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Pranzini, Henri,|d1856-1887.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2016046817 600 10 Regnault, Marie,|d1848-1887.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2016046936 600 17 Pranzini, Henri,|d1856-1887.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1941661 600 17 Regnault, Marie,|d1848-1887.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1942689 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1940|2fast 650 0 Murder|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85088613 |zFrance|zParis|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79058874-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Murder|xInvestigation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85088615|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79006404-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Trials (Murder)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85137369|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79006404-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Xenophobia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85148799|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79006404-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 7 Murder.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1029781 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Murder|xInvestigation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1029788 650 7 Trials (Murder)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1156368 650 7 Xenophobia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1182003 651 0 France|xHistory|yThird Republic, 1870-1940.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85051411 651 7 France|zParis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205283 651 7 France.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204289 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFreundschuh, Aaron.|tCourtesan and the gigolo.|dStanford, California : Stanford University Press, [2017]|z9781503600157|w(DLC) 2016016070|w(OCoLC)946579995 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1375505|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
