During an era of significant political, social, and economic change, girls' periodicals demonstrate the difficulties of fashioning a coherent, consistent model of girlhood. The mixed-genre format of these magazines, Moruzi suggests, allowed inconsistencies and tensions between competing feminine ideals to exist within the same publication. Adopting a case study approach, Moruzi shows that the Monthly Packet, the Girl of the Period Miscellany, the Girl's Own Paper, Atalanta, the Young Woman, and the Girl's Realm each attempted to define and refine a unique type of girl, particularly the religious girl, the 'Girl of the Period, ' the healthy girl, the educated girl, the marrying girl, and the modern girl. These periodicals reflected the challenges of embracing the changing conditions of girls' lives while also attempting to maintain traditional feminine ideals of purity and morality. By analyzing the competing discourses within girls' periodicals, Moruzi's book demonstrates how they were able to frame feminine behaviour in ways that both reinforced and redefined the changing role of girls in nineteenth-century society while also allowing girl readers the opportunity to respond to these definitions. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1999|2fast 650 0 Children's periodicals, English|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85023687|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Youths' periodicals|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85149392|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Girls|xBooks and reading|zGreat Britain|xHistory.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010004226 650 0 Young women|xBooks and reading|zGreat Britain|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010005077 650 0 Girls|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85055012 |zGreat Britain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79023147-781|xSocial life and customs|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008859 650 0 Young women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85149296|zGreat Britain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79023147-781|xSocial life and customs|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2001008859 650 0 Girls|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85055012 |zGreat Britain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79023147-781|xSocial life and customs|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008861 650 0 Young women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85149296|zGreat Britain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79023147-781|xSocial life and customs|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2001008861 650 7 Children's periodicals, English.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/856205 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Youths' periodicals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1183694 650 7 Girls|xBooks and reading.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/942871 650 7 Young women|xBooks and reading.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1183304 650 7 Girls.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/942866 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 650 7 Young women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1183301 650 7 Girls.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000590 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMoruzi, Kristine.|tConstructing girlhood through the periodical press, 1850-1915.|dFarnham, Surrey, England ; Burlington, VT : Ashgate, ©2012|z9781409422662 |w(DLC) 2012003108|w(OCoLC)777948047 830 0 Ashgate studies in childhood, 1700 to the present.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2005060212 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=466018|zOnline eBook.
