Is it a solution to ending poverty? Or is it a pursuit of economic growth and corporate profit? Drawing on more than a decade of research in the United States and Brazil, this book focuses on how the philanthropic, social responsibility, and business practices of various corporations use a logic of development that positions girls and women as instruments of poverty alleviation and new frontiers for capitalist accumulation. Using the Girl Effect, the philanthropic brand of Nike, Inc., as a central case study, the book examines how these corporations seek to address the problems of gendered poverty and inequality, yet do so using an instrumental logic that shifts the burden of development onto girls and women without transforming the structural conditions that produce poverty. These practices, in turn, enable corporations to expand their legitimacy, authority, and reach while sidestepping contradictions in their business practices that often exacerbate conditions of vulnerability for girls and women. With a keen eye towards justice, author Kathryn Moeller concludes that these corporatized development practices de-politicize girls' and women's demands for fair labor practices and a just global economy."--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on April 17, 2018). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Girl Effect (Organization)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/no2015137745 610 20 Nike (Firm)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n91058459 610 27 Girl Effect (Organization)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1996334 610 27 Nike (Firm)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/668131 650 0 Corporations|xCharitable contributions|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh85032935|vCase studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Corporate image|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85032900|xManagement.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002007911 650 0 Young women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85149296|xServices for|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2001008792|zDeveloping countries.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85037341-781 650 0 Poor girls|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh98005977|xServices for|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2001008792|zDeveloping countries.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85037341-781 650 7 Corporations|xCharitable contributions.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/879812 650 7 Corporate image.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 879659 650 7 Management.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1007141 650 7 Young women|xServices for.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1183326 650 7 Young women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1183301 650 7 Poor girls.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1071208 651 7 Developing countries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1242969 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMoeller, Kathryn.|tGender effect. |dOakland, California : University of California Press, [2018]|z9780520286382|w(DLC) 2017027256|w(OCoLC)981118213 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1696087|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
