Alcohol and the German Army -- Conclusion. 520 3 This book reveals how, over the course of the Third Reich, scenes involving alcohol consumption and revelry among the SS and police became a routine part of rituals of humiliation in the camps, ghettos, and killing fields of Eastern Europe. The book draws on a vast range of newly unearthed material to explore how alcohol consumption served as a literal and metaphorical lubricant for mass murder. It facilitated "performative masculinity," expressly linked to physical or sexual violence. Such inebriated exhibitions extended from meetings of top Nazi officials to the rank and file, celebrating at the grave sites of their victims. The book argues that, contrary to the common misconception of the SS and police as stone- cold killers, they were, in fact, intoxicated with the act of murder itself. The book highlights the intersections of masculinity, drinking ritual, sexual violence, and mass murder to expose the role of alcohol and celebratory ritual in the Nazi genocide of European Jews. Its surprising and disturbing findings offer a new perspective on the mindset, motivation, and mentality of killers as they prepared for, and participated in, mass extermination.|cpublisher 588 0 online resource; title from PDF title page (JSTOR, viewed October 7, 2021) 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 Germany.|bWehrmacht.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /no2015002790 610 17 Germany.|bWehrmacht.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1925477 610 20 Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter-Partei. |bSchutzstaffel.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79112414 610 27 Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter-Partei. |bSchutzstaffel.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 537326 647 7 Jewish Holocaust|d(1939-1945)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/958866 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)|xPsychological aspects. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061519 650 0 Drinking of alcoholic beverages|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85039589|zGermany|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80125931-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Alcoholism and crime|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85003306|zGermany.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80125931-781 650 0 Mass murderers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh96011183|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80125931-781|xPsychology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2002011487 650 0 Police|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85104183 |xAlcohol use|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99002331|zGermany.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n80125931-781 650 0 Soldiers|xAlcohol use|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008009271|zGermany.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80125931-781 650 7 Psychological aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1354086 650 7 Drinking of alcoholic beverages.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/898212 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Alcoholism and crime.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 804597 650 7 Mass murderers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1011421 650 7 Police|xAlcohol use.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1068401 650 7 Police.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1068398 650 7 Soldiers|xAlcohol use.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1125235 650 7 Psychology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1081447 650 7 HISTORY / Military / World War II.|2bisacsh 650 7 Mass murderers|xPsychology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1011422 650 7 Police.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001119 651 7 Germany.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210272 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 710 2 United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n87838989 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWestermann, Edward B.|tDrunk on Genocide |dIthaca : Cornell University Press,c2021|z9781501754210 830 0 Battlegrounds (Ithaca, N.Y.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2019097401 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2652221|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
