Index. 520 The "Sunningdale experiment" of 1973-4 witnessed the first attempt to establish peace in Northern Ireland through power-sharing. However, its provisions, particularly the cross-border 'Council of Ireland', proved to be a step too far. The experiment floundered amid ongoing paramilitary- led violence, finally collapsing in May 1974 as a result of the Ulster Workers' Council strike. Drawing on new scholarship from some of the top political historians working on the period, this book presents a series of reflections on how key protagonists struggled with notions of power-sharing and the 'Irish dimension', and how those struggles inhibited a deepening of democracy and the ending of violence for so long. --|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 General Strike|c(Northern Ireland :|d1974)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/939764 648 7 1968-1998|2fast 650 0 General Strike, Northern Ireland, 1974.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85053791 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 651 0 Northern Ireland|xPolitics and government.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85092560 651 0 Northern Ireland|xHistory|y1968-1998.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85092558 651 7 Northern Ireland.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1205215 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 McCann, David|q(David Patrick),|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2015022682|eeditor. 700 1 McGrattan, Cillian,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2010079250|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tSunningdale, the Ulster workers' council strike and the struggle for democracy in Northern Ireland. |dManchester : Manchester Universiy Press, 2017 |z071909951X|z9780719099519 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1481467|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
