Summary |
Three hundred years ago, around the year 1700, the Italian musician and craftsman Bartolomeo Cristofori invented a new musical instrument: the piano. Today, the piano is the most widely-played and best-loved of all musical instruments. "Three hundred years of people and pianos," a 60-minute documentary presents the instrument's three hundred year history with impressive pictures. It looks at the piano's beginnings in the 18th century, its dominant position in the 19th century, and its technical perfection in the 20th century. The film is a trip through time and to many important musical cities such as Florence, Vienna, Budapest, New York, Leipzig, Nürnberg and Berlin. It includes piano music from three centuries, interpreted by leading pianists, such as Rudolf Serkin, Claudio Arrau, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Evgeny Kissin, Ton Koopman, Daniel Barenboim, Robert Levin, Katia & Marielle Labeque, Ted Rosenthal and Thelonius Monk. |
