Note Reprint from American Jewish History, vol. LXIX, no. 3, March 1980.
Summary In April 1917, President Wilson sent a mission headed by Elihu Root to Russia to demonstrate support for the Provisional Government, and to ascertain how America might help Russia to continue to prosecute its war effort. Although the mission may first have been proposed by Oscar S. Straus, and it was of great interest to American Jews, it had no Jewish members. John R. Mott was its general spokesman "for religious and social benefit," and he was briefed on Jewish matters by Louis S. Brandeis. During Mott's brief sojourn in Russia, he interviewed Baron Gintsburg, G.B. Sliozberg (1863-1937), and E.V. Chlenov (1863-1918). Mott's notes--here reprinted in edited form--constitute an important source on the Jewish situation in Russia at this time. The Root mission achieved no apparent success, and shortly thereafter the Bolsheviks rose to power. Based on the Mott Papers at Yale Divinity School, government documents, and secondary sources; 39 notes.
