Incarceration, Dispersal, and Erasure: Destruction of a Community 520 "As a key West Coast destination for Japanese immigration to the U.S., Tacoma's vibrant nihonmachi had a significant population of Issei and Nisei by the 1920s and 1930s. Prior to World War II, the Tacoma Japanese Language School served as a community hub for the Japanese American community in the city. Based on interviews with over 40 Nisei former students of the school, Lisa Hoffman and Mary Hanneman develop an interdisciplinary analysis of identity construction and negotiations over belonging by second generation Japanese Americans in pre-World War II urban America. With an approach both transnational in perspective and focused on urban space, the book explores the everyday lives of Japanese American children prior to incarceration, including the impact of their daily study at and participation in community events associated with the school. Drawing from interviews and archival sources, the authors illuminate the rich prewar cultural experiences of Japanese Americans in the city, a distinct social history often eclipsed by a focus on wartime incarceration. Additionally, the book underscores the role of the Japanese government and imperial Japanese educational traditions in shaping Tacoma's JLS, as Japan sought to emerge as an equal member of the international community."--|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on January 21, 2021). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Nihongo Gakko (Tacoma, Wash.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2018176424|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Japanese Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85069603|zWashington (State)|zTacoma|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79071274-781|vInterviews. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001682 650 0 Japanese Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85069603|zWashington (State)|zTacoma|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79071274-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Japanese language|xStudy and teaching|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009127733|zUnited States.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Immigrants|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85064517|zWashington (State)|zTacoma|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n79071274-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Japanese Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 981441 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Japanese language|xStudy and teaching.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/981732 650 7 Immigrants.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/967712 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / Asian American Studies. |2bisacsh 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 651 0 Tacoma (Wash.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79071274|xRace relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00007552 651 7 Washington (State)|zTacoma.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1205636 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Interviews.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423832 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Interviews.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026115 700 1 Hanneman, Mary L.|q(Mary Louise),|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n2001055551|eauthor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHoffman, Lisa M.
