Summary Boldini informs Lejaune that Michael has a stolen jewel on him. After Boldini fails to persuade two of the other recruits to steal it for him, Lejaune himself persuades Bolidar - a former pick-pocket - to do so. He is caught in the act, and he only narrowly escapes being lynched. Lejaune, though, knows that they are to be sent to the isolated Fort Zinderneuf, where it will be easier to isolate Michael from his friends.
