To prevent suicides and other mental health problems, the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA) is implementing a variety of Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI). CalMHSA asked RAND to evaluate the PEI initiatives to prevent suicide. To help inform the design of this evaluation, we reviewed some key aspects of the suicide prevention (SP) program evaluation literature, including relevant theories of change, what is and is not known about suicide prevention program effectiveness, and what kinds of methodologies have been previously used in evaluations of suicide prevention programs. This report summarizes this scientific literature related to suicide prevention and is organized into three sections. First, we provide an overview of the epidemiology of suicide and of non-fatal self inflicted injuries in California, as well as the empirical support for suicide risk factors, and explain why understanding this epidemiology is a critical first step in any effort to evaluate the effectiveness of suicide prevention programs. Second, we present our framework for conceptualizing suicide prevention programs that can be used to guide evaluation; it is based on a review of the relevant scientific literature. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the measures that have been used to evaluate suicide prevention programs in the past. 588 0 Version viewed Oct. 27, 2014. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Suicide|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85129742|zCalifornia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79041717-781 650 0 Suicide|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85129742|zCalifornia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79041717-781|xPrevention.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002416 650 0 Preventive mental health services|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2004145104|zCalifornia|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041717-781|xEvaluation. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005674 650 0 Suicide|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85129742|zCalifornia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79041717-781|vBibliography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001362 650 0 Suicide|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85129742|zCalifornia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79041717-781|xPrevention|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002416|vBibliography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001362 650 7 Suicide.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1137578 650 7 Preventive mental health services.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1736496 650 7 Evaluation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/916975 651 2 California.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D002140 651 7 California.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204928 655 2 Review.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D016454 655 2 Statistics.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D020500 655 2 Technical Report.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D016427 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Bibliographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919895 655 7 Technical reports.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2015026093 655 7 Technical reports.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1941336 655 7 Bibliographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026048 700 1 Ramchand, Rajeev,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2010183114|eauthor. 700 1 Jaycox, Lisa,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n95036650|eauthor. 700 1 Becker, Amariah,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2014030942|eauthor. 700 1 Eberhart, Nicole K.,|d1978-|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2014113372|eauthor. 710 2 RAND Health,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2001145525|eauthor. 710 2 Rand Corporation,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n78083407|eissuing body. 710 2 California Mental Health Services Authority,|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2014189413|esponsoring body. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.7249/j.ctt3fh08z|zOnline eBook.
