The author charts the development of Maier's Hermetic worldview in the context of his service at the courts of Emperor Rudolf II and Moritz of Hessen-Kassel. The problem of the nature of early Rosicrucianism is addressed in detail with reference to Maier's role in the promotion of this "serious jest" in the years immediately prior to the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War. The work is set in the context of ongoing debates concerning the nature of early modern alchemy and its role in the history of Western esotericism. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Maier, Michael,|d1568?-1622.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82055294 600 17 Maier, Michael,|d1568?-1622.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/90957 650 0 Alchemy|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2007100970 650 0 Jungian psychology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh95006221 650 0 Rosicrucians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85115455|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Alchemy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/804245 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Jungian psychology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 984858 650 7 Rosicrucians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1100561 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aTilton, Hereward.|tQuest for the phoenix.|dBerlin ; New York : Walter de Gruyter, 2003|h322 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm.|kArbeiten zur Kirchengeschichte ; Bd. 88|z9783110176377|w(OCoLC)50572166 830 0 Arbeiten zur Kirchengeschichte ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n84746895|v88. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=629388|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
