In this compelling book, Beatriz Manzan anthropologist who spent over two decades studying the Mayan highlands and remote rain forests of Guatemalatells the story of the village of Santa María Tzejá, near the border with Mexico. Manz writes eloquently about Guatemala's tortured history and shows how the story of this villageits birth, destruction, and rebirthembodies the forces and conflicts that define the country today. Drawing on interviews with peasants, community leaders, guerrillas, and paramilitary forces, Manz creates a richly detailed political portrait of Santa María Tzejá, where highland Maya peasants seeking land settled in the 1970s. Manz describes these villagers' plight as their isolated, lush, but deceptive paradise became one of the centers of the war convulsing the entire country. After their village was viciously sacked in 1982, desperate survivors fled into the surrounding rain forest and eventually to Mexico, and some even further, to the United States, while others stayed behind and fell into the military's hands. With great insight and compassion, Manz follows their flight and eventual return to Santa María Tzejá, where they sought to rebuild their village and their lives. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres (Guatemala)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82232575 610 24 Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres (Guatemala) 610 27 Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres (Guatemala)|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/587434 650 0 Quiché Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85109838|xCrimes against|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh99005432|zGuatemala|zSanta María Tzejá.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n97109649-781 650 0 Quiché Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85109838|xRelocation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00007604|zMexico.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81013960-781 650 0 Massacres|zGuatemala|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2011001112|zSanta María Tzejá.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n97109649-781 650 0 Political violence|zGuatemala|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010107339|zSanta María Tzejá. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n97109649-781 650 0 Civil-military relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026352|zGuatemala|zSanta María Tzejá.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n97109649-781 650 0 Return migration|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85113386|zGuatemala|zSanta María Tzejá.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n97109649-781 650 7 Quiché Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1085724 650 7 Massacres.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1011476 650 7 Political violence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1069902 650 7 Civil-military relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/862889 650 7 Return migration.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1096413 651 0 Santa María Tzejá (Guatemala)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n97109649|xSocial conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 651 0 Santa María Tzejá (Guatemala)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n97109649|xPolitics and government. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002011436 651 7 Guatemala.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205154 651 7 Guatemala|zSanta María Tzejá.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1282242 651 7 Mexico.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1211700 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aManz, Beatriz, 1944-|tParadise in ashes. |dBerkeley : University of California Press, ©2004 |z0520240162|w(DLC) 2003009015|w(OCoLC)52216117 830 0 California series in public anthropology ;|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2001011232|v8. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=108506|zOnline eBook.
