It complicates narratives of increasing affluence in postwar Canada, revealing that the inverse was true for Indigenous communities along the Winnipeg River. Dammed makes clear that hydroelectric generating stations were designed to serve settler populations. Governments and developers excluded the Anishinabeg from planning and operations and failed to consider how power production might influence the health and economy of their communities. By so doing, Canada and Ontario thwarted a future that aligned with the terms of treaty, a future in which both settlers and the Anishinabeg might thrive in shared territories. The same hydroelectric development that powered settler communities flooded manomin fields, washed away roads, and compromised fish populations. Anishinaabe families responded creatively to manage the government-sanctioned environmental change and survive the resulting economic loss. Luby reveals these responses to dam development, inviting readers to consider how resistance might be expressed by individuals and families, and across gendered and generational lines. Luby weaves text, testimony, and experience together, grounding this historical work in the territory of her paternal ancestors, lands she calls home. With evidence drawn from archival material, oral history, and environmental observation, Dammed invites readers to confront Canadian colonialism in the twentieth century."--|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on October 14, 2020). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Indigenous peoples|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85090174|zLake of the Woods|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh88000202-781|xSocial conditions. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 650 0 Indigenous peoples|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85090174|zLake of the Woods|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh88000202-781|xEconomic conditions. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005736 650 0 Water resources development|xEconomic aspects|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010118342|zLake of the Woods.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh88000202 -781 650 0 Water resources development|xEnvironmental aspects|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85145615|zLake of the Woods.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh88000202 -781 650 0 Water-supply|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85145648|zLake of the Woods.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh88000202-781 650 0 Water security|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2011003817|zLake of the Woods.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh88000202-781 650 0 Hydroelectric power plants|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85063399|xEnvironmental aspects|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005383|zLake of the Woods.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh88000202 -781 650 0 Hydroelectric power plants|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85063399|xEconomic aspects|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh99005484|zLake of the Woods. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh88000202-781 650 7 Indigenous peoples.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 970213 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Economic conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919582 650 7 Water resources development|xEconomic aspects.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1171973 650 7 Water resources development|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1171977 650 7 Water-supply.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1172350 650 7 Water security.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1795729 650 7 Hydroelectric power plants|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/964942 650 7 Hydroelectric power plants.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/964930 650 7 Hydroelectric power plants|xEconomic aspects.|2fast|0https ://id.worldcat.org/fast/964941 650 7 Ethnic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 916005 650 7 Indigenous peoples|xEconomic conditions.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/970227 650 7 Indigenous peoples|xSocial conditions.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/970256 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 651 0 Lake of the Woods|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh88000202|xRace relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00007552 651 0 Lake of the Woods|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh88000202|xEthnic relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005646 651 7 North America|zLake of the Woods.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1246848 655 0 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLuby, Brittany.|tDammed.|dWinnipeg, Manitoba : University of Manitoba Press, 2020|z0887558747 |z9780887558740|w(OCoLC)1149215643 830 0 Critical studies in native history ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2011169640|v21. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2619958|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
