From her early, often harrowing memories of life and abuse in a remote Ojibwa community riven by poverty and alcoholism, Chacaby's story is one of enduring and ultimately overcoming the social, economic, and health legacies of colonialism. As a child, Chacaby learned spiritual and cultural traditions from her Cree grandmother and trapping, hunting, and bush survival skills from her Ojibwa stepfather. She also suffered physical and sexual abuse by different adults, and in her teen years became alcoholic herself. At twenty, Chacaby moved to Thunder Bay with her children to escape an abusive marriage. Abuse, compounded by racism, continued, but Chacaby found supports to help herself and others. Over the following decades, she achieved sobriety; trained and worked as an alcoholism counsellor; raised her children and fostered many others; learned to live with visual impairment; and came out as a lesbian. In 2013, Chacaby led the first gay pride parade in Thunder Bay. Ma-Nee Chacaby has emerged from hardship grounded in faith, compassion, humour, and resilience. Her memoir provides unprecedented insights into the challenges still faced by many Indigenous people."--|cProvided by publisher. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Chacaby, Ma-Nee,|d1950-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2016121632 600 17 Chacaby, Ma-Nee,|d1950-|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1988570 650 0 Lesbians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85076160|zOntario|zThunder Bay|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82164460-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Ojibwa Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85024423|zOntario|zThunder Bay|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82164460-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Cree Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85033881|zOntario|zThunder Bay|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82164460-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 5 Elders (Native peoples)|zOntario|zThunder Bay|vBiography. 650 7 Lesbians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/996540 650 7 Ojibwa Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1045067 650 7 Cree Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/882643 650 7 Lesbians.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000556 651 0 Thunder Bay (Ont.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82164460|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 651 7 Ontario|zThunder Bay.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1222943 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Autobiographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026047 655 7 Autobiographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919894 700 1 Plummer, Mary Louisa,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2011021768|eauthor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tTwo-spirit journey.|kCritical studies in Native history|kCritical studies in Native history ; |w(CaOONL)2015908010X 830 0 Critical studies in native history ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2011169640|v18. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1467598|zOnline eBook.
