For countless generations prior to European contact, land and territory informed Haudenosaunee thought and philosophy, and was a primary determinant of Haudenosaunee identity. In The Clay We Are Made Of, Susan M. Hill presents a revolutionary retelling of the history of the Grand River Haudenosaunee from their Creation Story, through European contact, to contemporary land claims negotiations. She incorporates Indigenous theory, Fourth world post-colonialism, and Amerindian autohistory, along with Haudenosaunee languages, oral records, and wampum strings to provide a comprehensive account of the Haudenosaunee relationship to their land. Hill outlines the basic principles and historical knowledge contained within four key epics passed down through Haudenosaunee history. She highlights the political role of women in land negotiations and dispels their misrepresentation in the scholarly canon. She guides the reader through treaty relationships with Dutch, French, and British settler nations-including the Kaswentha/ Two-Row Wampum (the precursor to all future Haudenosaunee-European treaties), the Covenant Chain, the Nanfan Treaty, and the Haldimand Proclamation-and details outstanding land claims. Hill’s study concludes with a discussion of the current problematic relationship between the Grand River Haudenosaunee and the Canadian government, and reflects on the meaning and possibility of reconciliation."-- Publisher's website. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Iroquois Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85068260|zOntario|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79034979-781|zGrand River Region|xHistory. 650 0 Iroquois Indians|xLand tenure|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85068264|zOntario|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79034979-781|zGrand River Region. 650 0 Iroquois Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85068260|zOntario|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79034979-781|zGrand River Region|xClaims. 650 0 Iroquois Indians|xGovernment relations.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85068263 650 0 Indians of North America|zCanada|xGovernment relations. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85065445 650 7 Iroquois Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 979404 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Iroquois Indians|xLand tenure.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/979417 650 7 Claims.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/863204 650 7 Iroquois Indians|xGovernment relations.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/979413 650 7 Indians of North America.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/969633 651 0 Grand River Region (Ont.)|xHistory. 651 7 Ontario.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204832 651 7 Canada.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204310 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Claims.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1774244 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 1 Hill, Susan M., 1971-|tClay we are made of.|kCritical studies in Native history|kCritical studies in Native history|w(CaOONL)20169059537 776 08 |cOriginal|z9780887551895|z0887551890|z9780887557170 |z0887557171|w(OCoLC)496964279 830 0 Critical studies in native history ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2011169640|v20. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1541236|zOnline eBook.
