It contributes to the study of Transatlantic relations between Africa and Jamaica, and in particular to the understanding of African influences in Jamaican linguistic practices. The book constitutes a first study of these phenomena from a cognitive-linguistic perspective and investigates traveling conceptualizations at the intersection of language, culture and cognition. The author explores Jamaican linguistic practices in different domains namely conceptualizations involving parts of the (human) body, conceptualizations of events, roles and relations underlying serial verb constructions, and conceptualizations of kinship and names. The study can be regarded as an innovative contribution as it looks not only at linguistic expressions on the surface but discusses the underlying cultural and cognitive basis of semantic structures. The study thus aims at making African -Jamaican connections on the conceptual level visible and also discusses notions of consciousness, agency and emblematicity. 588 Description based on print version record and CIP data provided by publisher. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 African languages|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85001729|zJamaica.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n81008540-781 650 0 Languages in contact|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85074606|zJamaica.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81008540-781 650 0 Anthropological linguistics|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85005577|zJamaica.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81008540-781 650 7 African languages.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 799798 650 7 Languages in contact.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 992434 650 7 Anthropological linguistics.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/810178 651 7 Jamaica.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1211575 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHollington, Andrea, author.|tTraveling conceptualizations|dAmsterdam ; Philadelphia : John Benjamins Publishing Company, [2015]|z9789027202970|w(DLC) 2015013358 830 0 Culture and language use ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/no2011084968|vv. 14.|x1879-5838 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1055153|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
