Hindus have given Jesus a place among the teachers and gods of their own religion, seeing in his life something of the wisdom and mysticism that is so central to Hinduism. Christians in India also make use of the concepts provided by Hinduism when they wish to express the meaning of Christ. Thus, in any case, Jesus is¿for Hindus and Christians¿a guru, a teacher of wisdom who speaks with divine authority. But for many Hindu philosophers and Christian theologians there is much more that can be said about him within the Indian framework. He can be described as an avatara, a divine descent, or linked to the Brahman, the all-encompassing Reality. This study looks at both Hindu and Christian views of Christ, starting with that of the Hindu reformer Rammohan Roy at the beginning of the nineteenth century, as well as those of the first Christian theologians of India. The views of Mahatma Gandhi and the monks of the Ramakrishna Mission are discussed, and those of influential Christian schools such as the Ashram movement and dalit theology. Five intermezzos indicate how artists in India portray Jesus Christ. 546 Translated from the Dutch. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 00 Jesus Christ|xHindu interpretations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85070028 600 07 Jesus Christ.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/40116 650 0 Christianity|zIndia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008100742 650 0 Hinduism|xRelations|xChristianity.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh87001176 650 0 Gurus|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85057982 |zIndia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80125948- 781 650 7 Hindu interpretations of sacred works.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1907307 650 7 Hindu interpretations of Jesus Christ.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1353212 650 7 Christianity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/859599 650 7 Hinduism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/957121 650 7 Relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1892706 650 7 Gurus.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/949496 651 7 India.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210276 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSchouten, Jan Peter, 1949-|tJesus as guru.|dAmsterdam ; New York : Rodopi, ©2008|z9042024437 |z9789042024434|w(OCoLC)262509444 830 0 Currents of encounter ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n88515782|vv. 36. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=257393|zOnline eBook.
