His term of office saw rapid reconstruction and growing prosperity after World War II. Civil war and revolution in China drove hundreds of thousands of refugees into the British colony, while tense relations between Britain and the new People's Republic gave rise to difficult and potentially explosive incidents in Hong Kong. Plans for democratic reform were quietly dropped as Grantham instead crafted an authoritarian form of government that combined strong leadership with gradual social reform - a system that lasted almost to the end of colonial rule. In this elegant memoir, first published by the Hong Kong University Press in 1965, Grantham describes his thirty-five years in the British colonial service, which began in Hong Kong in 1922 and ended here in 1957; he also held senior positions in Bermuda, Jamaica, Nigeria and the South Pacific. Only a few of Hong Kong's former governors have published anything about their terms of office here, but Grantham's stands out as the most interesting and substantial. Via Ports is an important first-hand account of the workings of Britain's colonial system. It also contains vivid, often amusing anecdotes about life behind the scenes in Government House during the long twilight of the British Empire. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Grantham, Alexander,|d1899-1978.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2013088863 600 17 Grantham, Alexander,|d1899-1978.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/2041838 650 0 Colonial administrators|zGreat Britain|vBiography.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008101207 650 0 Governors|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85056115|zChina|zHong Kong|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n92004431-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 7 Colonial administrators.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/868434 650 7 Governors.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/945704 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 Hong Kong (China)|xPolitics and government.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh97005582 651 0 Fiji|xPolitics and government.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008115021 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 651 7 China|zHong Kong.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1260796 651 7 Fiji.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208479 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGrantham, Alexander.|tVia Ports : From Hong Kong to Hong Kong.|dHong Kong : Hong Kong University Press, HKU, ©2012|z9789888083855 830 0 Echos.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n98103749 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=437698|zOnline eBook.
