Art, History, and the Human Adventure -- Conclusion -- Bibliography -- Index. 520 André Malraux was a major figure in French intellectual life in the twentieth century. A key component of his thought is his theory of art which presents a series of fundamental challenges to traditional explanations of the nature and purpose of art developed by post-Enlightenment aesthetics. For Malraux, art - whether visual art, literature or music - is much more than a locus of beauty or a source of "aesthetic pleasure"; it is one of the ways humanity defends itself against its fundamental sense of meaninglessness - one of the ways the "human adventure" is affirmed. Here for the first time is a comprehensive, step by step exposition, supported by illustrations, of Malraux's theory of art as presented in major works such as The Voices of Silence and The Metamorphosis of the Gods . Suitable for both newcomers to Malraux and more advanced students, the study also examines critical responses to these works by figures such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Maurice Blanchot, Pierre Bourdieu, and E.H. Gombrich, and compares Malraux's thinking with aspects of contemporary Anglo-American aesthetics. The study reveals that an account of art which Gombrich once dismissed as "sophisticated double-talk" is in reality a thoroughly coherent and highly enlightening system of thought, with revolutionary implications for the way we think about art. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Malraux, André,|d1901-1976|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79059794|xAesthetics.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002256 600 17 Malraux, André,|d1901-1976.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/36455 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900 - 1999|2fast 650 0 Art|xPhilosophy.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85007494 650 0 Aesthetics, French|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85001457 650 7 Aesthetics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/798702 650 7 Art|xPhilosophy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 815307 650 7 Aesthetics, French.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 798771 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAllan, Derek.|tArt and the human adventure.|dAmsterdam ; New York : Rodopi, 2009 |z9789042027497|w(OCoLC)475864373 830 0 Faux titre ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n42036085|vno. 341. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=307504|zOnline eBook.
