Rashmi Sadana places internationally recognized authors such as Salman Rushdie, Anita Desai, Vikram Seth, and Aravind Adiga in the context of debates within India about the politics of language and alongside other writers, including K. Satchidanandan, Shashi Deshpande, and Geetanjali Shree. Sadana undertakes an ethnographic study of literary culture that probes the connections between place, language, and text in order to show what language comes to stand for in people's lives. In so doing, she unmasks a social discourse rife with questions of authenticity and cultural politics of inclusion and exclusion. English Heart, Hindi Heartland illustrates how the notion of what is considered to be culturally and linguistically authentic not only obscures larger questions relating to caste, religious, and gender identities, but that the authenticity discourse itself is continually in flux. In order to mediate and extract cultural capital from India's complex linguistic hierarchies, literary practitioners strategically deploy a fluid set of cultural and political distinctions that Sadana calls "literary nationality." Sadana argues that English, and the way it is positioned among the other Indian languages, does not represent a fixed pole, but rather serves to change political and literary alliances among classes and castes, often in surprising ways. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900 - 1999|2fast 650 0 Indic literature (English)|y20th century|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008104412 650 0 Publishers and publishing|zIndia|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010109113|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Book industries and trade|zIndia|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009117360|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Politics and literature|zIndia|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010107412|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Postcolonialism in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002010213 650 0 Postcolonialism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh97007835|zIndia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80125948-781 650 7 Indic literature (English)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/970156 650 7 Publishers and publishing.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1083463 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Book industries and trade.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/836171 650 7 Politics and literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1069960 650 7 Postcolonialism in literature.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1073035 650 7 Postcolonialism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1073032 651 7 India.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210276 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Electronic books.|2local 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSadana, Rashmi.|tEnglish Heart, Hindi Heartland : The Political Life of Literature in India. |dBerkeley : University of California Press, ©2012 |z9780520269576 830 0 Flashpoints (Berkeley, Calif.) ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2010017998|v8. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=436621|zOnline eBook.
