With origins in the formative period of modern Japanese art and aesthetics, the figure of the bijin appeared across a broad range of visual and textual media: photographs, illustrations, prints, and literary works, as well as fictional, critical, and journalistic writing. It eventually constituted a genre of painting called bijinga (paintings of beauties). Aesthetic Life examines the contributions of writers, artists, scholars, critics, journalists, and politicians to the discussion of the bijin and to the production of a national discourse on standards of Japanese beauty and art. As Japan worked to establish its place in the world, it actively presented itself as an artistic nation based on these ideals of feminine beauty. The book explores this exemplary figure for modern Japanese aesthetics and analyzes how the deceptively ordinary image of the beautiful Japanese woman --an iconic image that persists to this day--was cultivated as a "national treasure," synonymous with Japanese culture." -- Publisher's description. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1868-|2fast 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 Since 1800|2fast 650 0 Feminine beauty (Aesthetics)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85047737|zJapan.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78089021-781 650 0 Feminine beauty (Aesthetics) in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2015001765 650 0 Feminine beauty (Aesthetics) in literature.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh94004218 650 0 Arts, Japanese|y1868-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85008404 650 0 Aesthetics, Japanese|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99003959 650 0 Aesthetics, Japanese|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99003961 650 7 Feminine beauty (Aesthetics)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/922652 650 7 Feminine beauty (Aesthetics) in art.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1921956 650 7 Feminine beauty (Aesthetics) in literature.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/922654 650 7 Arts, Japanese.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/818089 650 7 Aesthetics, Japanese.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 798786 650 7 HISTORY|zAsia|zJapan.|2bisacsh 650 7 Identität|gMotiv.|2gnd 650 7 Kolonialismus.|2gnd 650 7 Literatur.|2gnd 650 7 Loyalität|gMotiv.|2gnd 651 7 Japan.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204082 651 7 Taiwan.|2gnd 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLippit, Miya Elise Mizuta|tAesthetic Life : Beauty and Art in Modern Japan|dBoston : BRILL, c2019|z9780674975163 830 0 Harvard East Asian monographs.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n42012381 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2661816|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
