Summary German film reconstructed in the 1960s, years after the Nazis destroyed the original negative. Combines realism and expressionism for a biting satire of "respectable" society. Set in Victorian London in which both government and underworld are portrayed as amoral and polluted by economic and political chaos. A dashing thief called Mack the Knife gets away with robbery on a daily basis until he marries Polly Peachum, daughter of the king of the beggars. When the outraged king sends a force of crooked cops after Mack, the bandit must run for his life. Favorites from Weill's music score include Moritat, which became the 1957 pop hit Mack the Knife, and Pirate Jenny.
