In a new key -- Exile -- New creation -- Faith -- Paradise -- Fall -- The end of Enlightenment. 520 "Commonly translated as the "Jewish Enlightenment," the Haskalah propelled Jews into modern life. Olga Litvak argues that the idea of a Jewish modernity, championed by adherents of this movement, did not originate in Western Europe's age of reason. Litvak contends that the Haskalah spearheaded a Jewish cultural revival, better understood against the background of Eastern European Romanticism. Based on imaginative and historically grounded readings of primary sources, Litvak presents a compelling case for rethinking the most important concepts that currently inform the positioning of the Haskalah within the context of Jewish emancipation, nationalism, and secularization. Most importantly, she challenges the prevailing view that the Haskalah was the political and philosophical mainspring of Jewish liberalism. In Litvak's ambitious rereading, nineteenth-century Eastern European intellectuals emerge as the authors of a Jewish Romantic revolution. Fueled by unfulfilled longings for community, spiritual perfection, and historical authenticity, the poets and scholars associated with the Haskalah were ambivalent about the contemporary struggle for Jewish equality and the quest for material improvement. Their skepticism about the universal promise of Enlightenment continues to shape Jewish political and religious values." --Project Muse. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1899|2fast 650 0 Judaism|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85070847|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002012475 650 0 Judaism|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85070847|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002012474 650 0 Haskalah.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85059247 650 7 Judaism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/984280 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Haskalah.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/951828 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Dictionaries.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026086 655 7 Dictionaries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423826 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLitvak, Olga.|tHaskalah : The Romantic Movement in Judaism.|dPiscataway : Rutgers University Press, ©2012|z9780813554365 830 0 Key words in Jewish studies ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2011102506|vv. 3. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=592673|zOnline eBook.
