Sherry Sayed Gadelrab focuses on nineteenth and early-twentieth century Egypt, claiming that during this period there was a perceptible shift in the medical discourse surrounding conceptualisations of sex differences and the construction of sexuality. Medical authorities began to promote theories that suggested men's innate 'active' sexuality as opposed to women's more 'passive' characteristics, interpreting the differences in female and male bodies to correspond to this hierarchy. Through examining the interconnection of medical, legal, religious and moral discourses on sexual behaviour, Gadelrab highlights the association between sex, sexuality and the creation and recreation of the concept of gender at this crucial moment in the development of Egyptian society. By analysing the debates at the time surrounding science, medicine, morality, modernity and sexuality, she paints a nuanced picture of the Egyptian understanding and manipulation of the concepts of sex and gender."-- Bloomsbury Publishing. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1999|2fast 650 0 Women in medicine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85147591|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Women in medicine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85147591|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Medicine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85083064|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Medicine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85083064|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Medical ethics|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85082929|zEgypt.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781 650 0 Social medicine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123973|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Women in medicine.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1177924 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Medicine.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1014893 650 7 Medical ethics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1014081 650 7 Social medicine.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122637 651 2 Egypt.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D004534 651 7 Egypt.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208755 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGadelrab, Sherry Sayed, 1979-2013. |tMedicine and morality in Egypt.|dLondon ; New York : I.B.
