If we take Maximus¿́¿ claim to philosophical authority seriously, his case can deepen our understanding of the dynamic nature of Imperial philosophy. Through a discursive analysis of twelve Imperial intellectuals alongside Maximus¿́¿ dialexeis, the author proposes an interpretative framework to assess the purpose behind the representation of philosophy, rhetoric, and sophistry in Maximus¿́¿ oeuvre. This is thus as yet the first book-length attempt at situating the historical communication process implicit in the surviving Maximean texts in the concurrent context of the Imperial intellectual world. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed September 26, 2015). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 00 Maximus,|cof Tyre,|dactive 2nd century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85143899 600 07 Maximus,|cof Tyre,|dactive 2nd century.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1833688 650 0 Philosophy, Ancient.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85100861 650 0 Sophists (Greek philosophy)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85125278 650 0 Rhetoric, Ancient.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85113634 650 7 Philosophy, Ancient.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1060860 650 7 Sophists (Greek philosophy)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1126720 650 7 Rhetoric, Ancient.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1096982 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLauwers, Jeroen.|tPhilosophy, rhetoric, and sophistry in the high Roman Empire : Maximus of Tyre and twelve other intellectuals.|dLeiden, Netherlands ; Boston, Massachusetts : Brill, ©2015|h329 pages|kMnemosyne , bibliotheca classica Batava.
