In this book Jaeggi draws on phenomenological analyses grounded in modern conceptions of agency, along with recent work in the analytical tradition, to reconceive of alienation as the absence of a meaningful relationship to oneself and others, which manifests itself in feelings of helplessness and the despondent acceptance of ossified social roles and expectations. A revived approach to alienation helps critical social theory engage with phenomena, such as meaninglessness, isolation, and indifference, which have broad implications for issues of justice. By severing alienation''s link to a problematic conception of human essence while retaining its social-philosophical content, Jaeggi provides resources for a renewed critique of social pathologies, a much-neglected concern in contemporary liberal political philosophy. Her work revisits the arguments of Rousseau, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Heidegger, placing them in dialogue with Thomas Nagel, Bernard Williams, and Charles Taylor. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Alienation (Social psychology)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85003540 650 0 Self psychology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh88002287 650 7 Alienation (Social psychology)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/805268 650 7 Self psychology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1111468 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Neuhouser, Frederick.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n89668940 700 1 Smith, Alan E.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ nb2008020353 776 08 |iPrint version:|aJaeggi, Rahel.|tAlienation.|dNew York : Columbia University Press, ©2014|z9780231151986 830 0 New directions in critical theory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2007039389 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=853672|zOnline eBook.
