The needs of the service called for documents highly readable that, in their form and content, show a good degree of uniformity over time and space. Although some scholars have discussed the various typologies of documents and have reconstructed the branches of military bureaucracy, until now the topic is still a field open for study. 0The volume by Ornella Salati aims to address the question of documents? composition in the Roman army during the first three centuries AD, analysing Latin papyri from Egypt. Particular attention is paid firstly to their layout, visual details (format of columns, blank spaces) and handwriting (capital and/or cursive); secondly their pattern, content and language (specific sentences, formulae) are discussed. Comparative evidence from other military contexts (Vindolanda in northern England, Dura Europos in southern-eastern Syria, Gholaia in north Africa) are also taken into account. Possible connections with time and space, and even with the material support are explored in order to show similarities and differences. Such comprehensive approach consents to obtain a deeper knowledge of the organization of the Roman army and of the system of writing, authentication and archiving its documents. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on August 06, 2021). 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Manuscripts (Papyri)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85080781 650 7 Armed Forces.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/814586 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Armies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/814802 650 7 Telecommunication systems.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1146038 650 7 History, Military.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1353231 650 7 Manuscripts (Papyri)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1008260 650 7 Armed Forces|xCommunication systems.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/814595 651 0 Rome|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79039816 |xArmed Forces|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99002455|xHistory|vSources.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012008 651 0 Rome|xArmy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85115090|xCommunication systems.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002304 651 0 Rome|xHistory, Military|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85115172|vSources.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 651 7 Rome (Empire)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204885 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Sources.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423900 655 7 Military history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1411630 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSalati, Ornella.|tScrivere documenti nell'esercito romano : L'evidenza dei papiri latini d'Egitto tra I e III d.C.|dWiesbaden : Harrassowitz Verlag, ©2020|z9783447114516 830 0 Philippika ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2004046076|v139. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv1c9hmck |zOnline ebook.
