The report pays particular attention to geostrategic competition in Africa, potential security threats, and opportunities on the continent. It examines the economic, political, and security interests driving Chinese engagement with African states and assesses potential medium-term changes in Sino-African relations across these three dimensions. It then assesses how China's interests and behavior on the continent affect the interests of the United States. In this matter, misperceptions often result from faulty assumptions about the potential for conflict over resources, images of Cold War-style geopolitical competition, and the nature of China's economic engagement with the continent. The report concludes by offering policy recommendations for U.S. and Army leaders concerned with U.S. security relationships with African states and with managing Sino-American relations in Africa. In particular, the report recommends that the United States should view China's sometimes- unfavorable activities in Africa in context and continue to seek opportunities to engage Beijing on mutual interests, such as defeating violent extremists, improving African infrastructure to promote trade and development, and encouraging economic and political stability on the continent."--Page 4 of cover. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF cover (RAND, viewed June 11, 2015). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 National security|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85140387 650 0 Geopolitics|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85054192|zAfrica.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001531-781 650 7 Relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1892706 650 7 National security.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1033711 650 7 Geopolitics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/941045 651 0 Africa|xStrategic aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85001577 651 0 China|xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008114661|zAfrica.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85001531-781 651 0 Africa|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85001531 |xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00007590|zChina.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79091151-781 651 0 United States|xRelations|zChina.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2007100032 651 0 China|xRelations|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008101313 651 7 Africa.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239509 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 710 2 Rand Corporation,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n78083407|epublisher. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aThrall, Lloyd.|tChina's expanding African relations.|dSanta Monica, CA : RAND, [2015] |z9780833088505|w(DLC) 2015013117|w(OCoLC)905879979 830 0 Research report (Rand Corporation) ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2013072664|vRR-905-A. 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.7249/j.ctt15zc655 |zOnline ebook.
