That study observed that technological developments, reengineered operations, and economic forces are transforming the way products and services are conceived, designed, made, distributed, and supported, a transformation that is having profound effects on the world of work. Jobs consisting of repetitive tasks are being disrupted by automation or offshored to lower-cost producers. Workers are being asked to upgrade their skills to become more productive and adaptable. So far these changes have been most notable in manufacturing and high- technology services, but they are poised to also transform enterprises in energy, health care, education, and other sectors. To explore the effects of these changes on the workforce and on individual workers, the NAE held a workshop November 2-3, 2017, entitled "Preparing the Engineering and Technical Workforce for Adaptability and Resilience to Change." The first goal of the workshop was to increase stakeholders' understanding of both the importance of workforce adaptability and the definition and characteristics of adaptability. The second goal was to provide an opportunity to share best practices for fostering adaptability and to identify needs for future study and development. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop"-- Publisher's description. 588 Online resource; title from PDF title page (National Academies Press, viewed July 24, 2018). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Engineers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85043249|xTraining of|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00005618|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|vCongresses.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Industrial technicians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85133138|xTraining of|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005618|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Technical education|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008112649|vCongresses.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Labor supply|xEffect of technological innovations on |zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2009128391|vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001533 650 7 Engineers|xTraining of.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/910686 650 7 Engineers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/910639 650 7 Industrial technicians|xTraining of.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/971776 650 7 Industrial technicians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/971765 650 7 Technical education.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1144838 650 7 Labor supply|xEffect of technological innovations on. |2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/990189 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1423772 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2lcgft|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026068 700 1 Olson, Steve,|d1956-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n85025654|erapporteur. 710 2 National Academy of Engineering.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79110490|bSteering Committee on Preparing the Engineering and Technical Workforce for Adaptability and Resilience to Change,|eauthor. 711 2 Preparing the Engineering and Technical Workforce for Adaptability and Resilience to Change (Workshop)|d(2017 : |cWashington, D.C.) 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1883978|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
