Only three came out alive. "Goodbye wifes and daughters . . ." wrote two of the miners as they died. The story of that tragic day and its aftermath unfolds in this book through the eyes of those wives and daughters, women who lost their husbands, fathers, and sons, livelihoods, neighbors, and homes, yet managed to fight back and persevere. The author has uncovered the story behind all those losses. She chronicles the missteps and questionable ethics of the mine's managers, who blamed their disregard for safety on the exigencies of World War II. Also recounted are the efforts of an earnest federal mine inspector and the mine union's president (later a notorious murderer), who tried in vain to make the mine safer, as well as the heroism of the men who battled for nine days to rescue the trapped miners; and the effect the disaster had on the entire mining industry. She illuminates a particular historical tragedy with all its human ramifications while also reminding us that such tragedies caused by corporate greed and indifference are with us to this day. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 650 0 Coal mine accidents|zMontana|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00009386|zBearcreek|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n93096310-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Coal mine accidents|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85027365|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zMontana|zBearcreek|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n93096310-781|xHistory |y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Coal miners|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85027354|zMontana|zBearcreek|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n93096310-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Wives|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85147187 |zMontana|zBearcreek|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n93096310-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Women|zMontana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002008863|zBearcreek|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n93096310-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Disasters|xPsychological aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85038304|vCase studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Coal mines and mining|zMontana|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh89006834|xSafety measures|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00007912|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 7 Coal mine accidents.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 865301 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Coal miners.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/865316 650 7 Wives.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1176420 650 7 Women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1176568 650 7 Disasters|xPsychological aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/894796 650 7 Coal mines and mining.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /865355 650 7 Industrial safety.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 971664 650 7 Women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001509 650 7 Womyn.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001516 651 0 Bearcreek (Mont.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n93096310|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 651 0 Bearcreek (Mont.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n93096310|xSocial conditions|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008860 651 0 Bearcreek (Mont.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n93096310|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 651 7 Montana|zBearcreek.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1266891 651 7 Montana.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1207555 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 776 08 |iPrint version:|aResnick, Susan Kushner.|tGoodbye wifes and daughters.|dLincoln : University of Nebraska Press, ©2010|z9780803217843|w(DLC) 2009030035|w(OCoLC)428731344 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=314511|zOnline eBook.
