Much of that conversation has focused more on social issues. Malcolm Sparrow, who teaches at Harvard's Kennedy School and is a former British police detective, argues in this new book that there is another dimension that played a role not only in Ferguson but in many other high-profile police killings of unarmed blacks: the character of policing itself. Sparrow shows how police departments across America have shelved the traditional ideas of community policy-the cop on the beat how knows his or her neighborhood and its inhabitants -and also simple problem solving when it comes to crime to focus on crime reduction. That has meant a reliance on quantitative methods where police define how well they are doing by tallying up how many traffic tickets have been issued (Ferguson), or arrests made for petty crimes (Eric Garner selling nontaxed cigarettes in New York). The list goes on. Police departments need to shed this reliance on crime reduction metrics and mindsets and turn back to making public safety, and public cooperation, their primary goals"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Police|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85104208 650 0 Public safety|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008002399|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Race discrimination|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85110242 650 7 Police.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1068398 650 7 Public safety.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1745346 650 7 Race discrimination.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086465 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 650 7 Police.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001119 651 0 United States|xRace relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85140494 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSparrow, Malcolm K.|tHandcuffed.|b1 Edition.|dWashington, D.C. : Brookings Institution Press, 2016|z9780815727811|w(DLC) 2015040702 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1232693|zOnline eBook.
