Summary |
"The opera opens with Death and Harlequin, representing life, locked in bitter argument. The world has turned its back on love and wine, embracing blood and hatred. Harlequein can no longer laugh and begs Death to rescue him from boredom and despair. Death refuses and complains that modern technology has robbed him of his magnificent pageantry, replacing it with tanks and machine guns. His name no longer commands respect."--Notes, p. [3]. |
