Ronnie Perelis presents the fascinating stories of three men who were caught within the matrix of inquisitorial persecution, expanding global trade, and the network of Crypto-Jewish activity. Each text, translated here for the first time, reflects the unique experiences of the author and illuminates their shared, deeply rooted attachment to Iberian culture, their Atlantic peregrinations, and their hunger for spiritual enlightenment. Through these writings, Perelis focuses on the social history of transatlantic travel, the economies of trade that linked Europe to the Americas, and the physical and spiritual journeys that injected broader religious and cultural concerns into this complex historical moment"--|cProvided by publisher. 520 Blood and Dreams looks at three autobiographical texts written by individuals caught within the matrix of inquisitorial persecution, expanding global trade and crypto-Jewish activity in the early modern period. Luis de Carvajal, el mozo (1567-1596), also known as Joseph Lumbroso moved from Spain to Mexico when he was a teenager in 1580 and began writing his spiritual autobiography after his first inquisitorial trial in 1589. The Portuguese merchant Antonio de Montezinos (1604-1647), recounts his life-changing encounter with the lost tribe of Reuben living in the northern Andes. His account dates to 1644 but was only published in 1650 as part of Menasseh ben Israel's treatise on the fate of the Lost Tribes, Mikveh Israel/ Esperanza de Israel. Manuel Cardoso de Macedo (1585-1652) was an Azorean Old Christian who first embraced Calvinism before leaving Christianity behind and converting to Judaism. He wrote his spiritual autobiography, La Vida del buenaventurado Abraham Pelengrino Guer while living as a Jew in Amsterdam at some point after the 1620's. 546 Translated from the Spanish. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on January 20, 2017). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Carvajal, Luis de,|d1567?-1596.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n95122027 600 10 Mello, João Manuel Cardoso de.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n92112174 600 10 Montezinos, Antonio de,|dactive 17th century. 600 17 Carvajal, Luis de,|d1567?-1596.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/367031 600 17 Mello, João Manuel Cardoso de.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1987558 650 0 Crypto-Jews|zSpain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85081414|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 7 Crypto-Jews.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1765216 651 7 Spain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204303 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aPerelis, Ronnie.|tNarratives from the Sephardi Atlantic.|bFirst edition.|dBloomington and Indianapolis : Indiana University Press, 2017 |z9780253024015|w(DLC) 2016045755 830 0 Indiana series in Sephardi and Mizrahi studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011036187 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1443946|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
