Throughout Chinese history, food nostalgia has generated cultural currency for individuals. Tasting Paradise on Earth examines literary treatments of Jiangnan foodways from late imperial and twentieth-century China, and demonstrates the metamorphosis of this cultural landscape in contemporary China, with its new platforms for food nostalgia, such as broadcast media and the Internet. It also highlights the role that gender plays in the expression of food nostalgia and the construction of personal and cultural identities. This analysis both sheds light on Chinese modernization and has broader comparative relevance for the study of global food cultures and modernization. It demonstrates that the (re)formation and management of individual and collective identities in a society undergoing massive transformations can be achieved by homely arts such as cooking, in addition to--and perhaps more effectively than--'high' art forms such as literature and music"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on October 04, 2019). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Food habits|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008103983|zYangtze River Delta|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh91001195-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Food|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008120936|zChina|zYangtze River Delta|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh91001195-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Social change|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008111784|zYangtze River Delta|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh91001195-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Food habits.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/930807 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Food|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 930613 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122310 651 0 Yangtze River Delta (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh91001195|xSocial life and customs. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008851 651 7 China|zYangtze River Delta.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1258218 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFeng, Jin, 1971-|tTasting paradise on earth.|dSeattle : University of Washington Press, [2019] |z9780295745985|w(DLC) 2019001392 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2238645|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
